I stumbled upon Judith Herman's book, Trauma And Recovery years ago, comforted at the time to read stories of women who to my surprise, followed similar paths of self destruction, self medication, and dissociation. The book is not a guide about what to think or do, but a template for drafting one's own guidelines and ethos. I think that she will read it with or without me and then the next time we can discuss why or what she thinks is causing it and use the older and some new things to try. She made all her own choices, but that didn’t mean they were always wise. All of this is really lead in and back story for the "epic battle" approaching, which I will assume will be in one of the next two books of the series. I defer to the other reviewers, who gave 5 stars. I bought this book after renting it from the library and renewing it several times. I didn't know that about saltpeter. It has been reprinted yet again, in the current Modern Library hardcover and paperback editions, with a fine new introduction, by Elizabeth J. After reading the first chapter of Derek and Olivia's story at the end of the previous story, I was looking forward to the rest of the book and it didn't disappoint. The volume also includes an essay by Jerry Brotton, author of A History of the World in Twelve Maps, and a fictional short story by novelist and arts writer Michael Bracewell.
