Millar and Hitch presented the first real, real world interpretation of these character types and told a story that kept escalating and kept you wondering what might be real and what might not. The grandchildren really love it and we read it over and over. The threat of danger to the heroine only gives the story an added punch as she gets caught up in the illicit trafficking in blood diamonds. On one level this is a fast-paced CIA adventure story with comic overtones; on another it's a serious novel of ideas that brings the Big Picture into unexpected focus; but perhaps more than anything else, Fierce Invalids is a sexy celebration of language and life.
